The Overseas Filipino Countryside Development Fund – Local Government Bonds
Local Government Unit Bonds (LGU Bonds) are a way for the country’s towns, cities and provinces to raise funds for needed infrastructure and income-generating projects. Some priority projects identified are mass housing, mass transport systems, ferry terminals, slaughterhouses, waste disposal systems. Diaspora investors earn from the interest on the bonds, as well as can overlook local governments’ performance closely.
Tommy Miah’s Hospitality Management Institute
The initiative was undertaken in 2009 by an NRB from UK with the aim to train young people planning to go abroad as chef on hospitality management and catering services. The institute is now run by recruited professional management staff.
Umoja Operation Compassion Society
Umoja is a society helping to empower newcomers and immigrants integrate into Candadian society, as well as supporting initiatives to improve the quality of life in Africa. They have implemented different types of philanthropic projects over the years, such as infrastructural projects (building of schools) in Uganda, supporting microfinance facilities for school-going children and facilitating clean water in communities in Tanzania.
US-Bangla Group has various initiatives in Fixed Asset investment (Real estate), Philanthropic initiatives (private University) and Furniture business. The initiative was undertaken in 2009 for the benefit of the community, as well as to create profitability and higher income opportunities. Family members of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) and professional management team are responsible for the management of this scheme.
Valorisation des produits locaux [Valorisation of local products]
The project is implemented by "Migrations & Développement" (M&D), set up in 1986 by Moroccan migrants living in France. It aims to stimulate socio-economic development in the province of Taroudant through agrarian economic activities to fight poverty and vulnerability of the poor. Through the stimulation of the export of local products to France, MigDev offers potential for rural local development. The project offers support to economic activities in the agrarian sector of durable goods in the region such as local production of saffron, and olives (oil). It offers workshops to rural youngsters and single women taking care of children.
